The OUTLANDER™ Soft Truck Topper is Agri-Cover’s fabric-based (canvas) collapsible (“soft”) topper designed to cover the entire bed of a pickup truck, while still allowing flexibility to convert from a closed cap to an open bed.
Unlike a rigid shell, the OUTLANDER has a frame of aluminum bows that support a vinyl-coated canvas skin. It can fold forward (or be retracted) to expose the bed.
The design intention is to provide many of the protective benefits of a fixed truck cap (weather protection, security to a degree, covering cargo) along with flexibility (open bed, tall cargo) that soft covers allow.
Key Features
Here are the main features of OUTLANDER toppers (some may vary by model/year or trim):
| Feature | Description / Notes |
|---|
| Canvas / Fabric Skin | Vinyl-coated, UV-protected, mildew-resistant, waterproof canvas material. |
| Weather Sealing | Strategically placed seals around the top and a tailgate flap help block rain, snow, dust, and wind intrusion. |
| Windows | Removable/roll-up windows: The clear rear window can be rolled up or removed; the side panel windows (tinted) can also be removed. They use zippers and channels (no snaps). All windows are made with DOT-approved film. |
| Frame & Bows / Foldability | Aluminum quick-release bows let the topper fold forward (collapse) easily, converting from full coverage to open bed. |
| Side Rails / Clamps | One-piece side rails clamp onto the truck bed (extruded clamps) — no drilling is required for many models. |
| Lightweight, Low Noise | The aluminum frame helps maintain tension in the fabric, minimizing flapping or wind noise. |
| Full Bed Use / Tall Cargo | Because it’s soft and foldable, you can fold the bows forward and access the full bed (for taller cargo) without removing a rigid shell. |
| Third Brake Light Compatibility | It can block or accommodate a third brake light (often added as an accessory). |
| Model-Specific Fit | The topper is built to match specific make/model/bed configurations for a proper fit (i.e. non-transferable across different trucks). |
| Wind & Speed Stability | The design is intended to remain stable at highway speeds and not flap in the wind. |
A few additional usage cautions: The OUTLANDER frame is not designed to carry a load on top (unlike some hard caps).
Ideal Use / Applications
The OUTLANDER Soft Topper is ideal for users who want:
A balance between protection and flexibility (i.e. sometimes enclosed, sometimes open bed).
The ability to carry taller or bulkier loads occasionally without uninstalling the topper.
Protection from weather (rain, snow, dust) while still preserving some of the advantages of soft covers (lightweight, foldable).
Overlanding, camping, gear transport, or general cargo protection in variable conditions.
Use throughout all seasons (it is designed to remain in place even in winter, though you should remove accumulated snow/ice).
However, it is less robust than a rigid shell in terms of security, impact resistance, and roof load capacity. If you need to mount heavy racks or load heavy on the shell, a rigid cap might be more suitable.
Also, because it's fabric, it’s more susceptible to wear, punctures, or tearing (compared to rigid structures).
Installation Notes
To install an OUTLANDER topper, here are the key guidelines and tips based on Agri-Cover materials:
Follow the Model’s Instruction Manual
Use the specific OUTLANDER installation instructions for your truck (available from Agri-Cover’s instruction library).
One-Piece Side Rails & Extruded Clamps
The rails clamp onto the truck bed using extruded clamps. In most cases, no drilling into the bed is needed.
Frame & Bows Setup
Install the aluminum bows and fabric in sequence. The bows must be engaged properly to maintain tension. Use the quick-release mechanisms as designed.
Window Installation & Seals
Install side and rear windows using the zippers/channels. Ensure weather seals are seated correctly to prevent leaks.
Close Order (Rear Window / Flap / Tailgate)
Agri-Cover recommends that, for OUTLANDER, you close the rear window first, then raise the bottom flap, and finally close the tailgate. This ensures proper sealing.
Check Fit & Tension
After installing, ensure the fabric is taut, no slack or sagging areas, and no interference with tailgate or adjacent parts.
Time & Crew
Agri-Cover indicates that OUTLANDER installation can be done in about half an hour by two people (time may vary depending on experience).
Care & Maintenance
Proper maintenance will extend the life of your OUTLANDER topper. Here are recommended practices:
Regular Cleaning
Wash the fabric, rails, and frame periodically with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh detergents or solvents.
Use Cover Care / UV Protectant
Agri-Cover recommends periodically treating the fabric with their COVER CARE® Cleaner & UV Protectant to maintain UV resistance and prolong fabric life. Avoid citrus or petroleum-based products.
Avoid the Protectant on Windows
Do not use the COVER CARE products on the window panels, as it may damage them.
Inspect Seals & Zippers
Regularly check the seals, gaskets, and zipper channels for wear, deformation, or debris. Clean and lubricate lightly if needed (non-petroleum lubricants).
Remove Snow / Ice / Debris
Before driving, clear heavy snow or ice accumulation to avoid excess stress on the bows or fabric. The topper can remain in winter use, but clearance is important.
Avoid High-Pressure Sprays
When washing, be cautious with pressure washers, especially near edges and seams, to avoid forcing water under gaskets or damaging stitching.
Repair Small Damage Quickly
If you find small tears or punctures, patch them using compatible repair kits or materials to prevent them from growing.
Storage / Off-Season
If you remove or fold the topper for long periods, store it clean and dry in a sheltered place. Make sure the fabric is dry before storing to avoid mildew.
Tighten Clamps / Hardware
Periodically inspect clamps, bolts, and fasteners to ensure they haven’t loosened from vibration or thermal expansion.
Avoid Unauthorized Modifications
Do not drill new holes or make structural changes unless approved; such modifications may void warranty or cause leaks/damage.
Warranty
The warranty for OUTLANDER toppers is more limited than for Agri-Cover’s rigid DURACAP line. Key points:
Duration: 1-year Limited Warranty on the OUTLANDER Soft Truck Topper.
Coverage: It covers defects in workmanship under normal use.
Exclusions: Does not cover damage from accident, abuse, misuse, alteration, neglect, improper installation, or ordinary wear and tear.
Remedy: Agri-Cover’s obligation is limited to repair or replacement of defective parts (at its option). No labor / service allowance is included.
Claim Process: To make a claim, you’ll need the lot/serial number (for OUTLANDER, located on a tag near the rear brace bracket on driver’s side) and fill out a warranty claim via Agri-Cover’s warranty submission form.
Return Authorization: Parts or products returned for warranty inspection/repair must have a preauthorized RA (Return Authorization) number.
Limitation of Liability: Agri-Cover disclaims liability for incidental or consequential damages, and implied warranties beyond what is written.
